Back in the running

October 1st, 2008

Excellent news! Other than normal wear-and-tear for someone my age, the MRI of my spine shows a “slight protrusion” — no rupture — between the L3 and L4 vertebrae, resulting in L4 touching the right nerve root.

After some physical therapy and, to my chagrin, weight loss, I should be fine and able to run again. This whole episode — which left me crippled with blinding pain — was caused by playing fast and loose on a 6-ft. step ladder while working outside, leaning way over and wielding an electric hedge trimmer.

Weight loss! What weight could you possibly have available to lose, other than muscle? Or have you been living on Twinkies and Devil Dogs since the last marathon?

Seriously, this is very good news, and a huge relief. Congratulations, and here’s to a speedy recovery.

Great News! Now you’ll be a lean, mean running Dograt machine! And if you’re like me, after I realized what started my problem (twice for me!) you’re like: “Now why the (enter word of your choice) did I do that?”. My first time I did it I was cleaning out my dad’s car and sitting with my legs under me I bent forward and looked for something under the seat and super-hyperextended my back. The second time I shifted around a full filing cabinet a quarter-turn but that was enough. Now I think about that and I’m like “D’Oh!” :-) Good luck in your recovery!

    Doug,
That’s really great news! I’m hoping you have a very fast recovery.

Thank you for the good wishes! Very much appreciated. Believe me, when I was asked in the emergency room to rate the pain from 1-10, I didn’t hesitate to say that, like Nigel Tufnel’s amp in Spinal Tap, it went to eleven.

The Amazing DogRat vs the Ladder of Doom! Guess who loses?
Fantastic news, Dougie! So, the problem was between K3 and K4, eh? ;) Oh, I mean L3 and L4. Weight loss? YOU? That must be from your short time off the roads. There was a time when you could wolf down an entire Sara Lee Banana Cake in one day! Again, I’m so happy it isn’t as bad as it seemed. Happy recovery. Ya see? I told ya K3 would make ya better!

Great news Doug… Very happy for you.

    Enjoy the debate tonight!

Thanks, Dave. Sarah Palin has set expectations so low, I wonder if it wasn’t done intentionally.

    Dave,

The debate went as I expected, with Palin having been coached very well.

On an unrelated note, the DVD release of “Goodbye Mr. Chips” with Petula Clark and Peter O’Toole is still nowhere. I’ll be posting more of it soon.
