Peanuts Rocks The Vote

August 15th, 2008

I took some time off from blogging. Let’s pick up where we left off, with Peanuts and politics. The Charles M. Schulz Museum has an exhibit called Political Peanuts, running through December 1. And Peanuts Rocks The Vote this year with a nicely designed Flash animation page.

Happy birthday to Amy Schulz Johnson, back on August 5. And speaking of the Schulz family, in this photo there’s an extra swimmer in the pool with the Schulz kids. Who is that?

    Give us a hint!

I don’t know for certain who it is. I can make a pretty good guess, but I’m hoping Monte, who provided that picture to The Comics Journal, will pop in and say.

Okay, here I am. That’s not a really sharp picture, but judging by the size of the swimmer, and another distinguishing characteristic, I feel safe saying it’s Kenny Medrano, one of our neighbors back on Coffee Lane.
By the way, back in June, I signed a four book deal with Fantagraphics Books to publish my 20s novel.

Hi, Monte! I assumed that was Kenny. He was one of the kids who your dad identified when he piled into the station wagon (no seat belts!) in the ‘63 film of you guys on the way to school.

Hey, congrats on the book deal! That’s great. I’m in the middle of “Down by the River,” as a matter of fact. Lots of great characters, and I think I recognize an old girlfriend in there! ;-)

I’ve been getting some good mileage with scans from a book your dad illustrated in 1964, called “Dear President Johnson.” I think a lot of people don’t realize how much non-Peanuts work he did in the 60’s.

I know it may sound like a silly question, but there’s something I was very curious about and maybe Monte could help me!

    Well…

How tall was Joyce (Schulz’s first wife)?

She seemed very little at Sparky’s side! So cute :)

    Thank you!

Joyce is Monte’s mother, so he would know…

Yes, I hope he may help me! ;)

I just saw her in Hawaii, so let me guess here. My wife is 5′2 and she’s a little shorter than my mother, so let’s guess that Mom is 5′4 or so? I think that’s reasonable. Hey, Doug, guessing Kenny shows you’re totally on top of this. I would never have bet you’d make a guess like that. Wow! And “Down By The River.” Hmm. I haven’t read it in eighteen years, but I skimmed parts of it last year and regained a fondness for Rivertown and Howser and Jane. I think my new book(s) will knock you out, though. They show a completely different level of literary writing.

Ok, thank you very much! ;)
