Pet To Perfection

Before the Petula Clark blog links to a particular video, I’d like to post it here. This is from an appearance in France, early in 1973, after Pet had her son and had turned 40. She appeared with the late Claude François, who she obviously liked very much.

If this isn’t sexy and fun, I don’t know what is. Contrast this captivating performance with the video I posted of Pet from about 12 years earlier.

  1. Wow-eee! It’s none other than the tale-teller of “Avenging Annie” in person. I’m stunned and flattered.

Let me tell ya, Mr. Andy Pratt, living in the Boston area I got a lot of unearned attention in high school thanks to you. I owe you something to return the favor! More recently, I’ve heard some of your Christian music on the Dean College station — Power 88, out of Franklin, MA.

Thanks a zillion for stopping by! Everybody click on Andy’s name above right now, to go his MySpace page!

  2. Yes, I agree, Petula looks totally relaxed, and very sexy in this bit of fun with the magical Claude Francois. Everywhere she has gone she has learned… she admits this. She says quite openly that, in America she was working with people who were better than her (I’m not sure they were really better, just different). But if you listen to her patter, she is always a bit in awe of her co-stars. She watched Jaques Brel every night when they toured together and it was “une vraie education pour moi”. But in the States she worked with people like Deano, Andy Williams, Sinatra. She watched and learned and it added a whole new depth to her sophistication… and then she took it back to France with her, and this clip is an example of how relaxed, capable and in command of her performance she was.

She still uses all these things she has learned over the years; she still uses her undoubted sex appeal. And yet, for all her sophistication, she can still rock with the best of them.

  3. Thanks for the kind words, but my thanks go to you. My blog is an indulgence, a mere mish-mash of things, but yours is devoted to Pet, and it’s a very nice complement to the sites PetulaClark.net and PetulaClark.co.uk.

For my own upcoming surprise, I will be offering scenes of Pet in “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” — not yet out on DVD!

  4. Thank you so much for posting this marvellous video, and generally being very supportive of ‘Petula Clark: Driven by Emotion’ blog. There are quite a number of surprises coming up on the blog…

    take care,

  5. Yves,

I adore this duet, although I wish it were longer. The warmth and the humor and the affection they displayed together is wonderful.

  6. Oh sympa ,je ne connaissais pas ce duo, je croyais à tort que la seule performance de Claude et Petula c’ était Comme d’ habitude ( my way) dans une des dernières émissions de Claude François avant sa mort prématurée.

  7. From what I can make out of the French lyrics, they are pretty nonsensical, about different-colored snow, and chasing each other through rooms of a house! Still, it’s lots of fun!
