  1. Ohhh yeah. I’d forgotten about that. Tapioca Rip-Off. That was when I worked part-time in high school at the restaurant in the W.T. Grant store. I’d help myself to a scoop of the canned tapioca at the end of my shift.

Looking back on it, the entire chain of stores closed less than a mere four years after I started working there. Mr. Fowler, the second manager of the restaurant, resented it when people called it a cafeteria. He would point out, and rightly so, that customers serve themselves in cafeterias. Even McDonald’s isn’t a cafeteria by that definition. Grants had waitresses. Did we ever!

Here’s an odd memory. After McDonald’s opened at the front of the Grant’s parking lot, Dad surprised me by walking into the restaurant one Saturday morning. He told me he’d just had a strawberry shake at McDonald’s! I was a bit stunned by that, because I could have made one for him, with real ice cream, and it would have been free! What was he thinking?

  2. MUST — HAVE — SOME — NOW! Personally, I love Cherry Garcia the best; like you, I can’t stand just plain chocolate. I remember liking pure Breyers with the real vanilla beans still in it.

    Dougie, remember “Tapioca Rip-Off!?”
